The mortal remains of former prime minister Manmohan Singh were cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi on Saturday amid the chanting of religious hymns. The funeral pyre was lit by his eldest daughter Upinder Singh.
Singh was accorded with full state honours ahead of the cremation.
The final journey of former prime minister Manmohan Singh began in Congress headquarters and ended at Nigambodh Ghat where President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his cabinet ministers paid their last respects to the architect of India's economic reforms.
Singh body was taken to the Congress headquarters in New Delhi earlier this morning in a flower-bedecked vehicle where the senior Congress leaders along with the wife and kin of the former PM paid their last respects.
The Centre has assured Singh's family and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that the government will allocate space for a memorial later.
The issue over the funeral taking place at the crematorium in New Delhi raised discontent among Congress leaders as they asked for Centre to lay Singh to rest at a place where a memorial could be built. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh even called it a 'deliberate insult' to the first Sikh prime minister of India.
Dr. Manmohan Singh breathed his last on the night of December 26, 2024 after he was rushed in AIIMS Delhi in critical health condition. He is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters.
He was India's prime minister for 10 years between 2004 and 2014.

The procession carrying Singh's mortal remains reached the crematorium at around 11.30 am, where the last rites will be performed shortly.
Draped in the Tricolour, the flower-bedecked casket was placed at a raised platform, where leaders cutting across party lines laid wreaths on Singh's mortal remains.

— Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) December 28, 2024 MHA To Allot Memorial Space For Former PMIn a late-night release titled "Facts of the matter regarding memorial for Former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh", the ministry said the government received a request to allocate space for a memorial for Singh from the Congress chief.
Immediately after the Cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah communicated to Kharge and the family of Manmohan Singh that the government would allocate space for the memorial.
In the meanwhile, cremation and other formalities can happen because a Trust has to be formed and space has to be allocated to it, the home ministry said.
These two teams are meeting for the first time in the tournament in group stage.
